Passkey troubleshooting for Kiip

Kiip uses passkeys to secure your wallet and sign transactions. If you're having trouble, this guide will help you identify and resolve common issues.

What are passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern, secure way to protect your wallet and authorize transactions. Instead of relying on passwords, your device uses cryptographic keys to verify your identity. This provides strong security for your funds while remaining convenient to use.

Important: Add multiple passkeys

We strongly recommend adding multiple passkeys to your Kiip account. Because Kiip is non-custodial, we do not have access to your wallet or funds. If you lose access to your only passkey, there is no way for Kiip support to help you recover your funds.

To protect yourself:

  • Add at least two passkeys from different devices or providers
  • Consider using a combination of: your phone, a password manager, and/or a hardware security key
  • If you use a password manager, ensure you have a secure backup of your master password

Adding multiple passkeys takes just a few minutes and ensures you'll never lose access to your wallet.

Common issues and solutions

"Passkeys not supported" error

If you see a message that passkeys aren't supported on your device, try these solutions:

Kiip is open in an in-app browser (most common issue)

Passkeys won't work if you opened Kiip from a link inside another app (like a message, email, or social media app). When you tap a link in these apps, it often opens in a mini browser inside the app instead of your regular browser.

How to tell if this is your problem:

  • You tapped a link to Kiip from a text message, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, email, or similar app
  • The page looks like it's inside the app you came from, not in Safari or Chrome
  • You might see an "Open in browser" option somewhere on the screen

Solution: Open Kiip in your regular browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.):

  • On iPhone: Look for the Safari icon or "Open in Safari" option, usually at the bottom of the screen
  • On Android: Look for the three dots menu (⋮) and choose "Open in Chrome" or "Open in browser"
  • Or simply: Copy the link and paste it into your regular browser's address bar

Don't use private or incognito mode

Passkeys don't work in private browsing or incognito mode. This is because private mode blocks the storage needed for passkeys to function.

How to tell if you're in private mode:

  • Safari: The address bar is dark/black instead of white
  • Chrome: You'll see "Incognito" and a spy icon
  • Firefox: You'll see a purple mask icon

Solution: Close the private window and open Kiip in a regular browser window.

Your browser is outdated

Passkeys require a modern browser with WebAuthn support:

  • Chrome 67 or later
  • Safari 14 or later
  • Firefox 60 or later
  • Edge 79 or later

Solution: Update your browser to the latest version.

Your device lacks a platform authenticator

Some older devices don't have built-in passkey support. This is common on:

  • Older Windows computers without Windows Hello
  • Older Android devices
  • Linux systems without configured authenticators

Solution: Use a password manager that supports passkeys (see below).

Passkey creation fails

If you can't create a new passkey:

  1. Check browser permissions - Make sure your browser has permission to access your device's authenticator
  2. Try a different browser - Some browsers have better passkey support than others
  3. Disable browser extensions - Some security extensions can interfere with passkey creation

Passkey authentication fails

If your existing passkey isn't working:

  1. Verify you're on the correct device - Passkeys are often device-specific unless synced
  2. Check your authenticator - Make sure Windows Hello, Touch ID, or Face ID is working properly
  3. Try biometric authentication - If PIN isn't working, try fingerprint or face recognition

Using password managers as passkey providers

If your device doesn't have built-in passkey support, several password managers can act as software-based passkey providers.

Recommended options

1Password

  • Full passkey support on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Works via browser extension
  • 1password.com

Bitwarden

  • Passkey support available (some features require premium)
  • Open source with free tier
  • bitwarden.com

Google Password Manager

  • Built into Chrome browser
  • Syncs across devices where you're signed into Chrome
  • No additional installation needed

How software passkeys work

  1. Install a password manager with passkey support
  2. Enable the browser extension
  3. When Kiip requests a passkey, your password manager will intercept the request
  4. Authenticate with your password manager (master password, biometrics, etc.)
  5. The password manager provides the cryptographic response

Using hardware security keys

You can also use external hardware security keys as passkey providers. These offer excellent security and work across multiple devices.

Popular hardware options

YubiKey

  • Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn passkeys
  • Works via USB, NFC, or Lightning
  • yubico.com

Google Titan Security Key

How to use a hardware security key

  1. Insert your security key into a USB port (or tap via NFC on mobile)
  2. When Kiip prompts for passkey authentication, select your security key
  3. Touch the key's button to confirm the authentication
  4. The key provides the cryptographic response

Hardware security keys are portable and can be used across multiple computers, making them a great option if you use Kiip on different devices.

Still having issues?

Minimum requirements

Passkeys require:

  • A browser that supports the WebAuthn API (Chrome 67+, Safari 14+, Firefox 60+, Edge 79+)
  • Either a platform authenticator (Windows Hello, Touch ID, etc.), a password manager with passkey support, or a hardware security key

When passkeys won't work

In rare cases, passkeys may not be an option:

  • Very old browsers that can't be updated
  • Operating systems too old to run modern browsers
  • Restricted environments where browser extensions are blocked

In these cases, we recommend using a different, more modern device to access Kiip.
